When knowledge is a crime

By February 16, 2011May 28th, 20194 Comments1 min read7,655 views
[tab:English]I remember a time when having a typewriter was a crime.
I remember my older brother had one.
I remember when they caught him.
I remember visiting him every Monday for four years.

I remember a time when listening to SW radio was a crime.
I remember my other brother listened to one.
I remember when they caught him.
I remember they had machine guns.

I remember planning to steal a typewriter while listening to SW radio.
I remember when we did it.
I remember when they found it in my friend’s house.
I still remember his innocent face.

I remember the days before we had the Internet, Twitter and Facebook.
But one thing hasn’t changed: in some places, knowledge is still a crime.[tab:

    Hello Nava

It is such a beautiful and intense poem. Lovely. What I like best about your poem is the simplicity of the diction and the use of ‘ they’. Living in Karachi Pakistan, I can easily relate to the punch line of the poem ‘ Knowledge is Crime’. Yes it is crime and you are made to pay the price for it. I look forward to reading more of your creative pieces.
