Volunteer

Chatswood, Sydney, Australia

In 1969 Nobuko Ishii left Japan with a personal mission to see the world. Fate took her to Hong Kong, where she was to meet her Chinese husband and start a family. After 20 years in Hong Kong and before the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China, she and her family decided to migrate to Australia, where they have lived happily since. In Sydney, Nobuko lives a busy, fulfilling life, socialising with her many Japanese and Chinese friends, working as a volunteer at community centres and nursing homes, and continuing to travel in Asia on a regular basis. We interviewed Nobuko at a community centre in Chatswood after her Japanese card making class.
