Born and raised in Tokyo, Mayu Kanamori
arrived in Australia in 1981. She worked as a researcher and photographer for major news media companies in her early days before becoming a freelance photo journalist and artist. Mayu took us to Rookwood Cemetery
. Mayu wanted to show us the burial place of the first recorded Japanese settler in Australia, Sakuragawa Rikinosuke (arrived in 1860s). The interview location in a cemetery also fits the theme of one of her projects, In Repose
, which features the burial sites of Japanese people across Australia. In this interview, Mayu shares her views on being a transnational artist and the final destination of transnationals.
