Kay Ingleton

Born to a Japanese mother and an Australian father, who was stationed in Tokyo at the time of her birth, Kay was raised as Australian in Japan. Growing up as ‘half’ in Tokyo, she had all the advantages of having both worlds and felt accepted for who she was. During her childhood, her family relocated internationally several times, and they moved to Australia when she was nine. For the first time in her life, Kay was in her ‘home country’, and yet she was no longer Australian but ‘became’ the Japanese Other in late 1970s Australia. Yearning to live in a more accepting environment, she chose to return to Japan for her secondary education and enrolled at the International School of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo. At this school she gained a sense of belonging to the community of multilingual students and teachers with a global mindset. Having finished her education in Japan and having travelled widely in Europe, Kay returned to Australia in 1990s. She is now a well-established migration agent in Sydney and her transnational experience and multilingual background render her sensitive to the linguistic needs of her diverse clients. Calling Sydney, Tokyo and Paris home, Kay tells us what it means to be transnational – “home is where you make it and it can be anywhere.”

日本国籍の母とオーストラリア国籍の父を持つケイ・イングレトンさんは、その当時父親の出向勤務先であった日本で「オーストラリア人」として生まれ育った。「ハーフ」として「二つの世界」に育まれながら東京で幼少時を過ごす。父親の仕事の関係で何度も海外に移動し、９歳の時に初めてオーストラリアで生活する事になる。しかし、１９７０年代のオーストラリアではまだアジア人の地位が確立されていなかった。「母国」に住みながらもオーストラリア人としてではなく、「日本人」として差別される事もあった。寛容的な環境を求め、東京に単身で戻る事を決意する。聖心インターナショナルスクールに入学し、グローバルな背景を持つ学生や教師との出会いの中から自分の「居場所」を見つけた。

日本を離れヨーロッパにも長く滞在した後、オーストラリアに戻ってきたのは１９９０年代。現在は移民・移住エージェントとしてシドニーで活躍している。多国に滞在した経験や数多くの言語（英語・日本語・フランス語）を話せるという事が国際色豊かなクライアントとのコミュニケーションに生かされている。シドニー、東京そしてパリが彼女にとっての「ホーム」。「自分で自分の居場所を確立できる事、そしてそのホームはどこにでも作れるのが、トランスナショナルという意味ではないでしょか」と話してくれた。
